What Affects the Price of a New Garage Door

1. Size of the opening

Width and height come first. A single-car door costs less than a double door, and a taller opening, often added for a truck or a van, needs a taller door with more material and heavier springs. Older garages in Northeast Ohio often have openings that are narrower or shorter than today's standard sizes. Those can still take a new door, sometimes made to size.

We also check the headroom above the opening, the room at the sides for the tracks, and the depth of the garage. A low ceiling can call for low-headroom tracks or a wall-mount opener.

2. Material

Material drives the look, the lifespan and the price. These are the main choices we install:

Insulated steel: strong, low maintenance and warm. Our top pick for attached garages.

3. Insulation

Doors come with no insulation, with polystyrene panels, or with polyurethane foam injected between steel layers. More insulation adds to the price, but it also makes the door stiffer, quieter and better at holding heat in an attached garage. Our insulated garage doors page explains the options.

4. Windows and decorative hardware

5. The opener

A new door does not always need a new opener. If yours is in good shape, sized for the weight of the new door and has working safety sensors, we can usually keep it and recalibrate it. If it is old or underpowered, replacing it at the same visit saves a second trip. Any new opener we install comes with a free keypad. 6. Removal and haul-away of the old door

Haul-away of your old door is free when we install a new one. Every installation also includes the full system: tracks, rollers, cables and springs sized to the weight of the new door, followed by a complete safety check and test.

How much is a 9x7 garage door?

Nine by seven feet is one of the most common single-car sizes, so you have lots of styles to choose from. The price depends on the material, the insulation and the windows, so we measure and give you your exact price on a free estimate. You always hear the price and approve it before we start any work.

Does one double door cost more than two single doors?

It depends on the garage. One double door needs one opener and leaves a wider opening for cars. Two single doors need two openers and a center post, but if one door breaks you can still use the other. On the free estimate we can price both ways so you can compare.

Do windows raise the price of a garage door?

Yes. A solid door costs the least. Each row of windows, the window style and the glass type add to the price.

Will my current opener work with a new door?

Often, yes. If the opener is in good condition, strong enough for the new door’s weight and has working safety sensors, we can recalibrate it for the new door. If it is near the end of its life, we will tell you, and any new opener we install comes with a free keypad.

Does the $200 off apply to every new door?

Yes, it applies to any new garage door we install, and the haul-away of your old door is free. Mention the offer when you call. One coupon per job.

What should I measure before I call?

For a rough idea, measure the width and height of the opening, the headroom from the top of the opening to the ceiling, and the space at each side. We measure everything again for free at the estimate.

Can a new garage door go on my old tracks?

We install new tracks with every new door. Even a door the same size can be heavier or thicker than the old one, and the tracks, springs and cables have to match its weight to run safely. It is all part of the installed price we give you on the free estimate.

Does homeowners insurance pay for a new garage door?

Sometimes. Storm damage or a car hitting the door is often covered, while normal wear usually is not. What your policy covers is up to your insurer. We work with all insurance companies and can give you a written estimate and photos for your claim.
